The Pébéo Production Prize 2024 has been awarded to Emilie L. Gossiaux. We were impressed by her artistic practice. The artist employs her sense of touch to create compositions, utilizing her internal imagination. This approach enables her to recall the form and scale of a person, place, or thing in relation to her own body, in the absence of sight. Gossiaux's creations are spaces imbued with emotions and psychological significance, simultaneously strange and humorous, intimate and authentic.

Emilie L Gossiaux (b. 1989, New Orleans, LA) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in New York City. Gossiaux earned her BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art in 2014, and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale School of Art in 2019. Since losing her vision due to a traffic accident in 2010, Gossiaux’s altered experiences in the world has influenced her practice to grow— drawing on inspiration from dreams, memories, and non-visual sensory perceptions.

With her drawings, sculptures, and installations, Gossiaux explores themes such as love, intimacy, and the interdependent relationships between humans and non-human species. Through her work inspired by the interspecies bond she has with her Guide Dog, London, she celebrates disability pride, while disrupting the anthropocene understanding of agency, and the hierarchic ordering between humans and animals.

Emilie is currently working on her solo show at the Queens Museum, “Other-Worlding”, which will open at the Museum on October 22, 2023. Her installation project will include sculptures, drawings, and bas-relief murals that centers disability pride and animal liberation.

The installation is based on her drawing, “London, Midsummer”, which depicts three anthropomorphic dogs dancing on their hind legs holding onto dog leashes as they circle around a Maypole, which Emilie designed to look like her whitecane. This piece depicts the deep relationship Emilie has with her guide dog London and celebrates the whitecane as a symbol of freedom. With this ongoing project, Emilie has been exploring her interdependent relationship with London, the autonomy she gives her, and the way she feels more connected to the animal world through her.
